Can you build around a range hood?

This DIY Farmhouse Vent Hood Cover can be built for an installed vent insert or over an already installed vent hood. The basics are the same: a frame with attached cover boards, and trim hiding the seams. Every vent is different, and each one has different installation instructions, angles and shapes.

How do you build a shiplap range hood?

  1. Step 1: Develop a base frame.
  2. Step 2: Add side pieces of wood to the frame.
  3. Step 3: Add front boards to the frame to create a shiplap look.
  4. Step 4: Add the wood trim pieces to the front of the hood.
  5. Step 5: Paint and caulk the hood.
  6. Step 6: Stain the hood trim.

How high should a vent hood be?

The standard height for a range hood is between 28 and 36 inches from the cooktop for a gas range and electric range. 28 inches is the minimum height. If the hood is any closer, it may become damaged. Any further than 36 inches and your hood won’t move air away from your cooktop efficiently.

Can I cover my range hood with wood?

Build a custom decorative box to cover your old range hood. Reorganize your kitchen, so you don’t need the extra space of an overhead cabinet and then cover the front and sides with wood that you can stain or paint as shown here. You’ll still have access to the vent controls by reaching underneath.

How do you attach a range hood to the wall?

Lift the range hood into place and insert 1-1/4″ wood screws through the back braces into the studs. Insert screws through both back braces at all stud locations to secure your fan and hood to the wall. Cut two 1″ x 4″ poplar pieces to shelf’s desired width with miter saw.
