Can you spend the night on Mauna Kea?

Q: Is going to the MaunaKea visitor center worth it? Yes! At 9,200ft (2,800m) elevation the visitor center is a great place for stargazing, especially if you visit during the free weekly stargazing events (currently unavailable due to COVID restrictions).

Is it worth going to Mauna Kea Visitor Center?

Re: mauna kea visitor center : is it worth it? It is a waste of time unless you did the stargazing. If you want to entertain kids, take them to Imiloa, which is in town. It’s a long and not particularly safe drive from either side.

Is the road to Mauna Kea closed?

Maunakea weather varies widely and the Summit Access Road may be closed due to dangerous conditions even though most of Hawai`i is warm and sunny! When conditions are too dangerous, the Summit Access road is closed to ensure everyone’s safety. The road is re-opened as soon as the weather and the roads are safe again.

Do you need 4×4 for Mauna Kea?

Visitors are advised that only TRUE 4-wheel drive vehicles with LOW range may travel above the VIS. About 200 yards beyond the station, the pavement ends and the next five miles are a steep graded-gravel road.

Why is Mauna Kea so special?

Due to its remote location in the Pacific, Mauna Kea is free from the artificial light that is common in highly populated areas. Combined with its elevation of 4,205 meters (13,796 feet, 2.6 miles), the summit of Mauna Kea is the ideal location for the international astronomical observatory and the 13 international telescopes located there.
