What is ont on back of ATT modem?

It is a large white/gray box that looks pretty much like your regular NID (network interface device) usually mounted on the side of a house. Can I replace my Arris NVG589?
If you are looking to remove the NVG589 and replace it with your own modem/router, then you can’t. AT uses 802.1x which is an encrypted authentication protocol used by their modem/routers to connect to their network. You have to keep the NVG589 installed.
How do I reconnect my ATT Uverse Internet?
Restart your gateway or modem manually
- Unplug the power cord from the back of your gateway or modem.
- Wait 20 seconds.
- Put the internal battery back in, if you have one.
- Plug the power cord back in.
- Wait up to 10 minutes for the gateway or modem to restart and your Broadband light to turn solid green.
Does AT use coax cable?
AT at one time would use coax if that was the best available connection from the NID to the Gateway. They’ve not done that in years. Even then, it was twisted pair to the home which got converted to coax. At this point, you either get Fiber or twisted pair, depending on your service.

How do I know if my AT U-verse Wi-Fi gateway is working?
Check Power. If you have power and the Wi-Fi Gateway is turned on, the Power light on the front of your AT U-verse Wi-Fi Gateway will have a green light. If no lights are on: 1. Ensure the Wi-Fi Gateway is plugged into a working electrical outlet. The power cord should have a green light on indicating that there is power.
Can I buy my own U-verse gateway?
You cannot purchase your own U-verse gateway. The models newer than the one you currently have are the Arris NVG599 and Pace 5268AC which have dual band wireless-ac capabilities. These models are typically saved for those on higher tiers and such.
