Start your first zoo. You’ll need to put down two exhibits, any of them are fine as we don’t care about keeping up the animals happiness for now. Go to an empty space on the map and press the A button. Highlight and select exhibits, choose any theme, and build two small versions.

Why are some animals locked in Zoo Tycoon?
Initially I didn’t think there was a reliable way to make those reserve animals available, but it turns out that is down to a quirk in the way the game handles save states. When you save a challenge zoo, it does NOT create a traditional save file.

To release an animal into the wild, it must be Level 15. Animals increase in level as they age from Level 1 when they are born to a maximum of Level 15. Choose Release to Wild and the animal will be removed from your zoo (you do not get anything).
