Ozone is prepared in laboratory by passing silent electric discharge through dry oxygen. By passing the electric current some of the oxygen molecules dissociate and then atomic oxygen combines with oxygen molecules to form ozone.

Why is silent discharge used for the preparation of ozone?

The reaction is initiated by a sparkless or silent electric discharge, to produce less heat, as ozone is prone to decomposing back into oxygen with an increase in temperature (Le Châtelier’s Principle). Hence, ozone is prepared in a specially designed apparatus called an ozonizer to facilitate the above conditions.

What is Brodie’s Ozoniser?

Brodie’s ozonizer : It consists of a U-shaped tube as shown in the fig. The inner tube is filled with the sulphuric acid in which a platinum. electrode is dipped. The tube is immersed in a cylinder containing sulphuric acid and is fitted with a outlet for ozonized oxygen.

Why is ozone a powerful bleaching agent?

Ozone acts as the strong bleaching agent. Ozone has the capability to provide oxygen as well as the nascent oxygen. This production of nascent oxygen actually causes the bleaching action as it bleaches the color on a permanent basis.

What is the use of ozonizer?

Household ozonator is a device for the purification of water, air, food and household items; using ozone eliminates bacteria, viruses, odors and a broad range of contaminants.

What is Siemens ozonizer?

Siemen’s ozoniser It consists of two co-axial glass tubes fused together. Tin foil is used to coat the inner-side of the inner tube and the outer-side of the outer tube. The inner and outer tin coatings are connected to the terminals of an induction coil, which produces current of high voltage.

How is ozone is prepared from oxygen?

By passing a slow dry steam of oxygen through a silent electrical discharge, oxygen can be converted to ozone. The product formed through this process is known as ozonized oxygen.

Why is ozone a strong bleaching agent?

Is ozone permanent bleaching agent?

What is the best bleaching agent?

The most widely used bleach in the United States is liquid chlorine bleach, an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite. This bleach is highly effective at whitening fabrics and also provides germicidal activity at usage concentrations.

Is ozonizer harmful?

The EPA has reported there is a variety of health effects associated with high levels of ozone. This may include decreased lung function, throat irritation, severe asthma symptoms, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, irritation of lung tissue, and the higher sensitivity to respiratory infection.

How to prepare ozone ozone?

Preparation of Ozone Ozone can be conveniently prepared by passing silent electric discharge through pure, cold and dry oxygen. The apparatus used for this purpose is called ozoniser. 3O 2 → 2O 3 ; ∆ H= +284 KJ

How does an ozoniser work?

In principle, this ozoniser is like the Siemen’s ozoniser but dilute sulphuric acid replaces the tin foil. Two carbon electrodes are dipped in the acid and connected to an induction coil. A current of dry oxygen is passed through the space between the tubes. Ozonised oxygen containing about 5% O3 comes out at the other end.

What is ozonized oxygen?

When a silent electric discharge is passed through dry oxygen, ozone is formed. Oxygen is never converted into ozone completely and we always obtain a mixture of oxygen and ozone. This mixture is called ozonized oxygen. ‘Ozoniser’, is the apparatus used to prepare ozone by the passage of silent electrical discharge.

What is the working principle of ozone oxidizer?

The inner and outer tin coatings are connected to the terminals of an induction coil, which produces current of high voltage. A slow current of pure and dry oxygen is passed through the annular space. On subjecting oxygen to silent electrical discharge, ozonised oxygen containing 10-15% ozone is formed.
