IGMP proxying should be left enabled unless it causes problems. This allows the router to convert Multicast traffic into Unicast traffic, allowing for the network especially wireless devices, to work more efficiently.

What is IGMP protocol used for?

The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) manages the membership of hosts and routing devices in multicast groups. IP hosts use IGMP to report their multicast group memberships to any immediately neighboring multicast routing devices.

What is IGMP mode?

Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping allows the switch to forward multicast traffic intelligently. Based on the IGMP query and report messages, the switch forwards traffic only to the ports that request the multicast traffic rather than to all ports.

Is IGMP enabled by default?

Scenario with Multicast Router The two switches have IGMP snooping enabled by default and we are using default VLAN 1.

Why is IGMP needed?

IGMP is required for this product because the total amount of network traffic across the network needs to be reduced to avoid impacting the other connected devices. Without IGMP, the video extender would send the video signal to each of the devices on your network.

How does IGMP protocol work?

IGMP works on devices that are capable of handling multicast groups and dynamic multicasting. IGMP snooping is a process to listen to the IGMP network traffic in controlled manner. Switch receives the message from host and forwards the membership report to the local multicast router.

Why do we need IGMP?

The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is a network layer protocol that allows several devices to share one IP address so they can all receive the same data. Networked devices use IGMP to join and leave multicasting groups, and each multicasting group shares an IP address.

What applications use IGMP?

IGMP can be used for one-to-many networking applications such as online streaming video and gaming, and allows more efficient use of resources when supporting these types of applications. IGMP is used on IPv4 networks.
