- Fluid intake. During the first 1-2 weeks after the operation it is important to drink plenty of fluid to flush any new bleeding from the bladder.
- Antibiotics. Sometimes after a TURP patients are discharged on antibiotics.
- Activity.
- Bowels.
- Bleeding.
What is TURP nursing?
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems that are caused by an enlarged prostate. An instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the tip of your penis and into the tube that carries urine from your bladder (urethra).
How is TURP performed?
TURP is carried out using a device called a resectoscope, which is a thin metal tube containing a light, camera and loop of wire. This is passed along your urethra until it reaches your prostate, which means no cuts (incisions) need to be made in your skin.
What should I do after TURP surgery?
How can you care for yourself at home?
- Rest when you feel tired.
- Be active.
- Allow your body to heal.
- Ask your doctor when you can drive again.
- Many people are able to return to work within 1 to 3 weeks after surgery.
- Do not put anything in your rectum, such as an enema or suppository, for 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
Is TURP an outpatient procedure?
The transurethral resection of the prostate is a minimally invasive procedure performed in the hospital setting. It can be an outpatient procedure, or it may require a one-night stay at the hospital.
What is the new procedure for prostate surgery?
Physicians at UC San Diego Health are now offering prostate artery embolization (PAE) as a new treatment option for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. The minimally invasive procedure is an alternative to surgery, with no hospital stay, little operative pain and lower cost.
Is a TURP major surgery?
TURP is a major surgery with serious risks and potential complications. You may have less invasive treatment options.
What to expect after TURP?
After having a TURP, it’s normal to occasionally notice some blood in your urine. Around a week or two after the operation, the amount of blood may increase as the scab on your prostate falls off. Drinking plenty of fluids will help flush any blood or small blood clots out of your bladder.
How long after TURP does pain last?
Urinating after TURP. This usually is not painful but may make your bladder feel uncomfortably full. After around 24 to 48 hours, the catheter will be removed to check if you can pass urine and are able to go home. It’s normal to find urinating uncomfortable and difficult to control for at least a few days after the catheter is removed.
