Epidural hematomas usually appear convex in shape because their expansion stops at the skull’s sutures, where the dura mater is tightly attached to the skull. Thus, they expand inward toward the brain rather than along the inside of the skull, as occurs in subdural hematomas.

Would you expect a hemorrhage found in the epidural space to be from damage to an artery or a vein?

Bleeding Complications Epidural hematoma formation following injection is extremely rare. Bleeding usually occurs because of damage to the veins in the highly vascular epidural space.

What happens to burr holes after surgery?

Your surgeon will shave and disinfect the area where the burr hole is needed. Once they remove the hair, they’ll wipe down your skin with a sterile cleaning solution to reduce the risk of infection.

Why does discovery of an epidural hematoma require emergent surgery?

Emergency surgery is often necessary to reduce pressure within the brain. This may include drilling a small hole in the skull to relieve pressure and allow blood to drain outside the skull. Large hematomas or solid blood clots may need to be removed through a larger opening in the skull (craniotomy).

What are some signs and symptoms of epidural hematoma?

The most important symptoms of an EDH are:

  • Confusion.
  • Dizziness.
  • Drowsiness or altered level of alertness.
  • Enlarged pupil in one eye.
  • Headache (severe)
  • Head injury or trauma followed by loss of consciousness, a period of alertness, then rapid deterioration back to unconsciousness.
  • Nausea or vomiting.

What is a common cause of epidural hematoma?

An epidural hematoma (EDH) occurs when blood accumulates between the skull and the dura mater, the thick membrane covering the brain. They typically occur when a skull fracture tears an underlying blood vessel. EDHs are about half as common as a subdural hematomas and usually occur in young adults.

When is surgery needed for epidural hematoma?

Surgical intervention is recommended in patients with: Acute EDH. Hematoma volume greater than 30 ml regardless of Glasgow coma scale score (GCS) GCS less than 9 with pupillary abnormalities like anisocoria.

What does hematoma feel like?

A hematoma can be defined as a pool of blood trapped outside a blood vessel. If you have a hematoma, your skin might feel spongy, rubbery or lumpy. Hematomas can occur in many places on the body, even deep within the body. Some hematomas are medical emergencies.
