Canale and Kelly’s view: This view is taken with foot plantar flexed and pronated to 15 degrees and it delineates medial column along the talus. This view is used for assessing the amount of comminution and displacement of fracture neck talus (Figs.

What is talar neck fracture?

Talar neck fractures are high energy injuries to the hindfoot that are associated with a high incidence of talus avascular necrosis.

What is the talar head?

The talar head is the part that articulates with the navicular bone. On its inferior aspect, this is continuous with three articular facets that are separated by smooth ridges. There are anterior and middle facets which articulate with corresponding facets on the calcaneus.

How do I identify my talus?

Structure

  1. The talus is shaped like a truncated cone and is wider anteriorly than posteriorly (it is an irregular saddle-shaped bone).
  2. Approximately two-thirds of its surface area is covered with articular cartilage and it has a tenuous blood supply, similar to the scaphoid.

What does a weight bearing foot xray show?

The weightbearing lateral foot radiograph is important in the assessment of foot alignment and the diagnosis of abnormalities that cause malalignment and foot pain. Nonweightbearing views (e.g. lateral foot) would be inadequate for the assessment of alignment as the bones of the feet are not in their functional state.

Can you walk with a broken talus?

You should be able to walk on it, but not without pain. Displaced. The pain, swelling, and tenderness are greater. You may not be able to put weight on the injured ankle.

What bone articulates superiorly with talus?

distal tibia
The talus articulates superiorly with the distal tibia, the medial malleolus of the tibia, and the lateral malleolus of the fibula to form the ankle joint. The talus articulates inferiorly with the calcaneus bone. The sustentaculum tali of the calcaneus helps to support the talus.

What bone has no muscle attachment?

1 Talus (Figures 13.6–13.7, 13.17) The talus is called the astragalus in other animals. It is the second largest of the tarsals and is situated between the tibia and fibula superiorly and the calcaneus inferiorly. No muscles attach to this bone.

How is the Canale view used to evaluate a talar neck fracture?

The Canale view may be obtained to further evaluate talar neck fractures, which are often oblique to the transverse or sagittal plane of the foot. The Canale view is obtained by placing the ankle in maximal plantar flexion, pronating the foot approximately 15°, and directing the x-ray beam 75° cephalad.

What does the normal anatomy of the talus look like?

Figure 1b Normal anatomy of the talus. Three-dimensional reconstructed computed tomographic (CT) images show the talus and its key components in superior (a) and inferior (b) projections. The talar body articulates with the calcaneus inferiorly via two discrete articular facets. The posterior facet is larger and located posteriorly and laterally.

Can the Canale view be modified for better evaluation of Varus displacement?

In addition to conventional radiographs and computed tomography scans, the Canale view has proven to be beneficial, especially when evaluating for varus displacement. This study investigated whether the original method of performing the Canale view could be modified for improved evaluation for varus displacement.

How does the talar body articulate with the calcaneus?

The talar body articulates with the calcaneus inferiorly via two discrete articular facets. The posterior facet is larger and located posteriorly and laterally. The middle facet is smaller and more medial, articulating with the calcaneal sustentaculum tali.
