Relatively large and complex conidia are termed macroconidia while the smaller and more simple conidia are termed microconidia. The presence/absence of conidia and their size, shape and location are major features used in the laboratory to identify the species of fungus in clinical specimens.

What does Trichophyton rubrum look like?

rubrum are white and cottony on the surface. The colony underside is usually red, although some isolates appear more yellowish and others more brownish. Trichophyton rubrum grows slowly in culture with sparse production of teardrop or peg-shaped microconidia laterally on fertile hyphae.

What is a Microconidia?

Medical Definition of microconidium : a conidium of the smaller of two types produced by the same species and often differing in shape (as in members of the genus Fusarium) — compare macroconidium.

What is Microconidia cell?

The microconidia can function either as spermatia (male gametes) or as asexual reproductive structures or both. In nature they probably function exclusively in fertilization of protoperithecia.

What is the life cycle of Trichophyton rubrum?

rubrum has a non-sexual life-cycle, comprising a tear-shaped conidia stage and a hyaline septate mycelia stage. Conidia protect the T. rubrum genome during adverse environmental conditions, and infection is triggered when the conidia adhere to the corneum of the skin and form mycelia.

Does Trichophyton rubrum have a cell wall?

Moreover, through the production of extracellular vesicles the host innate immunity can be modulated (Bitencourt et al., 2018). The constituents of the cell wall of the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum determine pathogen virulence.

Which organism produces macroconidia and Microconidia?

The pathogenic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum, exists in nature as a filamentous organism that produces two asexual spores, microconidia and tuberculate macroconidia.

What is the shape of macroconidia?

Macroconidia (macroaleurioconidia) pluricellular, cylindrical, “club-shaped” or “cigar-shaped”, “smooth-walled”, often absent; arthroconidia and chlamydospores sometimes present. Several species are typically sterile, but may be induced to form conidia on appropriate media.

Do dermatophytes have microconidia or macroconidia?

Dermatophytes typically produce two different asexual reproductive cells, microconidia and macroconidia. Epidermophyton floccosum will infect skin and nails but not hair. Microscopically, they will have septate hyphae with club shaped macroconidia.

Does Microsporum audouinii have microconidia?

Microscopically, they will have septate hyphae with club shaped macroconidia. They do not produce microconidia. Microsporum audouinii can cause scalp ringworm especially in children, it rarely effects adults. It has a spindle shaped macroconidia, can have comb like hyphae, and terminal chlamydoconidia.

What is the morphology of microconidia in Trichophyton?

Few or no microconidia are produced. At 37°C, they produce 2-5 celled thin-walled, club-shaped to cigar-shaped macroconidia and numerous microconidia which also over in clusters, or may occur singly. The transmission of Trichophyton is via direct or indirect contact with an infected individual or through spores.
