Obviously, quilting as a craft came to America with the early Puritans. Quilts were made in those early days in America to serve a purpose, to provide warmth at night and to cover doors and windows to help reduce cold. Quilts were functional, with little time for women to create decorative quilts.

Where did quilts come from?

Quilting originated in Sweden in the fifteenth century with heavily stitched and appliquéd quilts made for the very wealthy. These quilts, created from silk, wool, and felt, were intended to be both decorative and functional and were found in churches and in the homes of nobility.

What are the oldest quilt patterns?

The earliest geometric forms used for quilting patterns were the rectangle, the square, and the diamond. The “Four Patch” and the “Nine Patch” are the oldest known block patterns. Both were made entirely of squares, and they early-on featured light and dark divisions.

Who started quilting?

In Europe, quilting appears to have been introduced by Crusaders in the 12th century (Colby 1971) in the form of the aketon or gambeson, a quilted garment worn under armour which later developed into the doublet, which remained an essential part of fashionable men’s clothing for 300 years until the early 1600s.

Why are quilts so special?

A quilt can bring much more than physical comfort. It will hold love and memories, and if it is made from fabrics that already have a history those memories will be even stronger.
