The divisibility rule of 9 states that if the sum of digits of any number is divisible by 9, then the number is also divisible by 9.

What is casting out nines used for?

This method can be generalized to determine the remainders of division by certain prime numbers. So we can use the remainder from casting out nines to get the remainder of division by three. Casting out ninety nines is done by adding groups of two digits instead just one digit.

Does casting out the nines work in other bases?

Casting out nines works because 9 is one less than 10, i.e. one less than the base we use to represent numbers. The analogous trick would work casting out (b-1)’s in base b. So you could cast out 7’s in base 8, or F’s in base 16, or Z’s in base 36.

How do you cast out nines?

You can cast out nines by adding the digits and then adding the digits of that answer until your final number is < 9. OR, you can add the digits and then determine the remainder for that number after dividing by 9. OR, you can just determine the remainder after dividing the ORIGINAL number by 9.

How do you cast out 9’s?

What do you notice about the sum of the digits of each multiple of 9?

9 is divisible by 9. i.e., n gives the same remainder modulo 9 as the sum of its digits. In particular, it gives remainder 0 (divisible by 9) iff the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.

What is an example of casting out nines in math?

Examples in which casting-out-nines has been used to check addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are given below. In each addend, cross out all 9s and pairs of digits that total 9, then add together what remains. These new values are called excesses.

How do you find the value of 9 using multiplication?

First, cross out all 9s and digits that total 9 in each factor (italicized). Add up leftover digits for each multiplicand until one digit is reached. Multiply the two excesses, and then add until one digit is reached. Do the same with the product, crossing out 9s and getting one digit.

Does adding 9 influence a digit sum?

BUT WAIT! Sometime during the development of this condensation trick, someone, bless their soul, found out that adding 9, or any combination of digits which add to nine, does not influence a digit sum. Ex: The digit sum of 34 is 7.

How many nines can you add to nine?

Quite frankly, they found that you can add as many nines or, combinations of numbers that add to nine, as you want, and it wont change the digit sum. Take a look at 543,994. Here we get 5+4+3+9+9+4=34.
