What is a foal and mare?
A foal is an equine up to one year old; this term is used mainly for horses, but can be used for donkeys. When a mare is pregnant, she is said to be “in foal”. When the mare gives birth, she is “foaling”, and the impending birth is usually stated as “to foal”. A newborn horse is “foaled”.
How does a mare give birth?
Even in a normal delivery, the mare may stand up, lie down and roll several times in an effort to properly position the foal for delivery. During this phase, contractions move the foal through the cervix and into position in the birth canal. The fetal membranes (allantois) may become visible at the mare’s vulva.
How long does a mare take to foal?
320 to 362 days
The average gestation length in the mare ranges from 320 to 362 days; most mares will foal within 330-345 days of successful breeding. However, mares have successfully foaled with gestation lengths outside this range.
What do you do when a foal is born?
New Foal Checklist
- Make sure the foal is breathing.
- Put iodine on the foal’s umbilical stump.

What are the 3 stages of foaling?
Parturition is divided into 3 stages.
- Stage I is characterized by signs of abdominal discomfort and restlessness due to uterine contractions.
- Stage II starts with the rupture of the chorioallantois and ends when the fetus is expelled.
- Stage III involves expulsion of the fetal membranes.
How long is a mare in labor?
The foal is usually born after 12 to 18 minutes of heavy labor. Maiden mares (mares foaling for the first time) are more likely to take about an hour to expel the fetus. Handlers should be ready to assist if it goes much longer than an hour. Mature mares in labor for more than 30 to 45 minutes may also need assistance.

What’s the difference between a filly and a foal?

What happens when a mare gives birth to a foal?
During the bonding process, the mare will lick and nuzzle the foal. It may look like the mare is biting the foal, but this is not the case. Some mares stand up immediately after the foal is born, and others remain lying down for a period of time.
Is it possible for a mare to go into labor during labor?
Generally, this is the first stage of labor (however, be aware that colic remains a possibility; if such behavior is prolonged for more than an hour or two without progress towards foaling, contact your veterinarian). Most mares foal without difficulty. It usually is best to allow the mare to foal undisturbed and unassisted.
How does a horse give birth to a baby?
Pressure from her growing milk supply pushes the teats away from the udder and, as foaling nears, the teats enlarge, ready for the arrival of her newborn foal. Around three weeks prior to foaling, the muscles of the pelvic area begin to relax to enable the passage of the foal through the birth canal.
How do you prepare a mare for foaling?
To provide your mare with a safe and secure place to foal, without outside interference, place her in a paddock or stall free from hazards. In the final weeks ahead of foaling, you should continue to watch your mare closely to ensure mare and foal come out of delivery happy and healthy.
