Correct pushrod length is dictated by rocker arm geometry. This means the rocker arm tip must operate at the center of the valve tip, across its widest diameter. If it operates off center—say, closer to the intake manifold—the pushrod is too short. Closer to the exhaust manifold indicates it’s too long.

Are push rods different lengths?

The adjustable pushrods come in five separate lengths from 5.800 to 10.800-inch. Each pushrod will offer one inch of travel. For example, the 10.800-inch version pushrod tool will extend out to 11.800 inches.

Where do pushrods go?

Function. The roller ball at the lower end of the push rod rides on the lobes of the camshaft. The upper ball seats into a recessed cup on the underside of a rocker arm. As the offset lobe of the cam contacts the lower ball, the push rod is forced up and lifts the rocker arm.

Do I need longer pushrods?

An ideal pushrod length will minimize the distance that the valve trip travels across the valve tip. Pushrods that are either too long or too short only increase this distance. A too-short pushrod positions the rocker tip too far to the intake (inboard) side of the valve tip.

How long are the pushrods on a Ford 302 block?

FORD, SMALL BLOCK 302 HO w/ E7, GT40P & GT40. 6.250″/6.272″ Hardened Pushrods, Stock Length for SB Ford 5.0/302 GT40, GT40P, HO, Engines w/ Factory Hyd Roller Lifters.

How do you measure pushrods?

Pushrods are measured two or three ways. There’s gauge length, Actual length and theoretical length. You’re likely measuring the actual length and the info you got may have been the gauge length. 6.875 vs 6.850 are the same length. You’re only .025″ short which is less than a 32nd of an inch.

How do you change the length of a pushrod length valve?

Screw the two ends back together and set the push rod length tool to the factory length of 6.272 inches. Color the top of the valve with a permanent marker or paint pen. Slide the tool through the guide plates. Position one roller rocker onto the guide plate and push rods length tool.

What is the stock pushrod length for a roller cam?

The stock pushrod length for a roller cam 5.0 is 6.250 (per the Comp Cams website), just like what you have already. Not sure why you are having a problem with the ends breaking…if they were too short I would think you would have excessive valvetrain noise.
