XJ Cherokee/Wagoneer: 1987-1989 (some say up until 1990) XJ Cherokees with the Tow Package sometimes came with the Dana 44 rear axle. These are now hard to come by because of Wrangler and Cherokee owners using them to upgrade their weak Dana 35s and because it’s an easy bolt-in swap for Cherokees and Wranglers.
What Dana 44 will fit a XJ?
The original XJ 44 can be bolted on to any Cherokee, with a possible modification only to the rear driveshaft. It’s a length issue. The Dana 44 pinion is about an inch longer than the Dana 35 pinion, so technically you’ll need a driveshaft that’s an inch shorter.
Are all XJ high pinion?
All 1984-1999 XJ and MJ have high pinion D30. The 2000-01 XJ have low pinion. HP vs. LP is where the differential pinion snout is located on the differential, down low or up high.
Can a Dana 44 handle 40s?
For a daily driver or a non wheeling rig, 44 and 40’s are fine.
