Tohatsu Marine Corporation was set up in 1988 as joint venture with Brunswick Corporation, USA. Mercury Marine is a division of Brunswick Corporation and many of the smaller Mercury Outboards are just rebranded Tohatsu Engines. In addition, the entire line of Nissan outboards are rebranded Tohatsus.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8, is it any good? Tohatsu is the second largest producer of outboards in the world. All outboards manufactured today are very well made and I would not say one brand is better than another. But that little 9.8 is the best bang for the buck of any brand.

Are Tohatsu 4 stroke motors any good?
A guy at boaters world told me the other day that the 2005 and 2006 tohatsu 4 strokes are awesome motors, he says they weigh 82 pounds which is very light for a 4 stroke, and they are very effecient and reliable. I currently have a 1971 mercury 9.8 and it is getting to be less and less reliable.
Are Tohatsu and Mercury the same?
