How is an imperforate anus diagnosed? A doctor can usually diagnose an imperforate anus by performing a physical exam after birth. An X-ray of the abdomen and abdominal ultrasound can help reveal the extent of the abnormalities.

What causes imperforated anus?

Although the exact cause of imperforate anus is not fully understood, it is believed to be due to the abnormal development of the rectum when the embryo is forming inside the womb. Many forms of imperforate anus occur with other birth defects. Imperforate anus may also be part of a syndrome with multiple birth defects.

  • Swollen belly.

Can imperforate anus be fixed?

A child with a narrow, low imperforate anus may only need one surgery. This surgery gently widens the anus. A child with an intermediate or high imperforate anus may need many surgeries. This is done to rebuild or move the anus.

To treat imperforate anus, surgery will be performed to create an opening, or new anus, to allow stool to pass. The surgery may differ, depending on whether the anus ends high or low in the pelvis.

For mild imperforate anus defects: The first step involves enlarging the opening where the stool drains, so stool can pass more easily. Surgery involves closing any small tube-like openings (fistulas), creating an anal opening, and putting the rectal pouch into the anal opening. This is called an anoplasty.
